VACCINES AND IMPORTANCE OF VACCINES
The biggest defense against infections in babies is breast milk and vaccines. Newborn babies get protected against diseases with antibodies that they take from their mothers. However, this protection gets lost within a short time. On the other hand, newborn babies do not have antibodies inherited from the mother against some diseases such as pertussis. If the babies are not vaccinated and encounters microbe of the disease, its body may not be as strong as it will fight with the diseases. Many babies used to be lost before vaccine is found out due to the diseases that can be protected with vaccines in our time. The same organisms are also present but infants are protected by vaccines.
Vaccines are biological products containing weakened or dead micro-organisms and used in treatment and protection of infectious diseases. Mechanism of action of vaccines is similar to natural disease; both of which stimulate the immune system, and recognizes the microbe in the body and strengthens the immune system. The most important difference between vaccination and undergoing a disease is that disease is not undergone with vaccination or to escape it very lightly. From this point of view, vaccination is a protection measures against especially infectious diseases. Chicken pox, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, meningitis, measles, rubella, mumps, pertussis, pneumococcal pneumonia, polio, diphtheria, tetanus, rabies, meningococcal, influenza disease can be prevented with vaccines.
To show a protective effect of vaccines, they should be applied in suitable ages and ranges. For this reason, vaccines should be applied before the periods where risk of getting caught with diseases in children is in very high level. Required orientations relating to routine vaccination program for the babies should be conducted by the doctor as of the first examination.
