Ovaries are the organs located on both sides of uterus in the abdominal cavity as hung. Ovum providing fertility in women is stored in ovary. There are tw ovaries in women. These are organs reproducing ovo and releasing them. Moreover, it secretes estrogen and progesterone.
Ovarian diseases which are determined by gynecological examination and pelvic ultrasonography may cause infertility in women and also functional cysts and ovary cancer.
General symptoms are stomachache, fever and odorous discharge. Diagnosis is established by examination and analysis of discharge microbiologically. If not treated, ovaritis becomes chronic and abscess is formed and it causes infertility and tube occlusion. In this case ovaries and tubes should be removed by operation.
Ovarian cysts are fluid filled sacs in the ovaries. Ovarian cysts are frequent and observed in two types: functional and abnormal. Functional cysts develop for the normal function of the ovary. It is smaller than abnormal cysts and disappears automatically without need of treatment.
It is developed by reproduction cells in the ovaries. Treatment is excising cysts by surgical method. If cyst is evaluated as the cancer, ovary may be excised or uterus and ovary peritoneum lymph nodes and appendix may be excised based on the phase of the cancer.
Chocolate Cyst (Endometriosis)
It is the settlement of internal wall of uterus in ovaries. The main sign is pain. Cyst in the ovary resembles melted chocolate and therefore it is called as “chocolate cyst” and is one of the reasons of infertility. It is a chronic disease and may repeat. These cysts are excised by surgical procedure and treatment to suppress new focus is administered.
It is the small cyst ranging in the internal wall of ovaries. It results in delay of menstruation. In addition to this, it may trigger type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, infertility, risk of miscarriage. Treatment is administered by the condition of the patient.
It is observed in the women above 50 years of age. Ovarian cancer is observed in women with the ovarian cancer family history and going through early menopause more frequently. The cancer starts in ovaries and metastatis in breast, uterus or intestine may occur. Early diagnosis and correct treatment is very significant. It isn’t generally possible to diagnose ovarian cancer without clear signs in early stage and diagnosis is established in the advanced stage. For this reason, regular examination is recommended for especially women above the age of 40.
