DEVELOPMENT OF INFANT
The period of infancy is one of the most significant phases following the neonatal period. It is the period that the baby grows the fastest after the birth. While the part growing fastest is the head in the first stage of infancy, chest girth grows fast after month 6, arm and leg after month 9. Development of brain, nerve and muscles continues in a parallel way. The child can hold its head and then sit and walk. Skills of voluntary movement, understanding, being interested around, indicating the wishes develop.
Neurological developments of premature babies, low birth weight babies and at risk should be followed closely. In addition to this, if you think that baby or child is different from peers and can’t do things he has done before, you should warn your pediatrist.
If gross and fine motor development stages of the baby delay;
• If the baby can’t hold his head when he is 3-month completely,
• If there is difference between the use of right and left arm and/or leg
• If 6-month baby isn’t turning
• If 8-month baby can’t sit independently
• If 12-month baby can’t stand up by holding
• If 15-month baby isn’t walking
If social development delays;
• If 3-month baby doesn’t make sounds or smile when cared,
• If 4-month baby doesn’t react happily when he is played with,
• If 7-month baby doesn’t find the strangers odd,
• If 12-month baby doesn’t wave his hands, clap with two hands
A neurological problem should be doubted and you should consult a physician.
Language development is parallel with cognitive and physical development in children. Language and speech development retardation may be observed in children. It may arise from cases that problem of hearing, mental retardation, learning disability, autism, behaviour disorders, not having persons speaking correctly, face and mouth problems (cleft palate, cleft lip), brain, muscular and nerve system problems. If retardation of speaking or social development at any age is observed, “Wait and see, watch more” isn’t applicable. If speaking education is necessary, very significant term will be lost for treatment. For this reason, language and speech development should be followed closely.
