Thyroid is an endocrine gland in butterfly-shaped with 20-25 g weight and placed at the bottom of Adam's apple in the front side of neck. Thyroid gland causes the secretion of hormones to the body to regulate metabolism.

Functions of the thyroid gland in the body

Thyroid glands have 2 lobes as right and left and bridge section called "isthmus" connecting lobes. Its consistency is very soft. It is so soft that cannot be easily detected in a normal examination.

Thyroid gland secretes thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormone is indispensable for growth, development, energy production and energy use, ensuring and maintaining body heat normal functions of all kinds of metabolisms, other hormones and enzymes.

It is vital in growth and development process. Thyroid deficiency may cause growth retardation and even dwarfism.

It is effective in forming energy. Thyroid hormone deficiency slows down movements and reduces energy of a person. It is almost like slow motion or hibernation.

It is of high importance in formation of body temperature. Body temperature drops in heavy thyroid hormone deficiency. Tolerance to cold decreases.

It is crucial in sufficiently effective formation of metabolism. All kinds of generation and destruction activities slow down in the body in the deficiency of thyroid hormone. For instance; cholesterol absorption and formation decreases in the body; however, cholesterol rises in the blood since destruction will decrease much more. Therefore, cholesterol is present with high level in the blood in thyroid dysfunction.
In thyroid hormone deficiency, it is seen that other hormones and enzymes are not apparently effective. A variety of complaints and symptoms may occur depending on these processes.
